I have been teaching for over twenty years. I have taught first and second grade, math, library, computer skills, and gifted and talented (GT) students. I love to integrate technology into my teaching. I believes that all kinds of learning is more fun and more meaningful when kids can use computers.
I have been married over 25 years. My wife is a teacher, too. My son is 18, and my daughter is 12.
A big part of my job as a GT teacher is to advocate for students who learn differently. I try to communicate with their teachers to help them create ways for the GT kids to learn challenging topics in interesting ways. There are certainly things that are good for all of us, but if a child really does not need the same lessons that the rest of his or her classmates need, there should be alternatives. Perhaps one student needs to be empowered to diplomatically inquire of his teacher, "What can I do to show you that I already have the skills you are teaching?" Another might need to be able to go beyond what is expected of the rest of the class, and not by being assigned extra work only after completing the too-simple basic work.
