Wow! Our summer is nearing to its end, and we will be back in the classroom before you know it. I am looking forward to a great and exciting year. For your convenience, I have included a supply list of items your child should bring to my class.
I believe in supplying a cooperative learning environment that caters to your child’s individual learning needs. I’ve found that if you listen and observe children they will tell you how to teach them. There’s an Ancient Chinese Proverb that says: Tell me and I forget, Show me and I remember, Involve me and I understand. I believe all students are capable of excellence, and I am comfortable about sharing the responsibility of helping them achieve this with the help of you parents, our community members, and of course the children. It’s not about what I teach, but whom and how, and every day will be challenging with high expectations.
Below is some brief information and cute pictures of our last year's 2nd Graders reading, who have gone on to be fantastic, well abled 3rd Graders. There is more information about our 2nd Grade in the 2nd Grade Informational Handbook (important stuff), so be on the look out for it. I look forward to meeting you and your child soon. If you have any questions or concerns you can email me at grace_collins@dpsk12.org.
Math: Math is taught using the Everyday Math Curriculum. Many hands-on manipulative materials allow the children to explore various mathematical concepts. Children problem solve in many different ways, record, and share their mathematical thinking. Each child will have their own log-ins to EverydayMathGamesOnline.com which can be accessed at home, at a public library or anywhere online access is available to them. This is a very useful tool for math practice!

Literacy: Daily, we read in different genres digging deeper using comprehension strategies, building our fluency and accuracy, and reflecting on what we have read.

Writer’s Workshop: Daily, we write in different genres working through the whole writing process.

Science/Social Studies: Either we are working on the curriculum called “Tracks” and focusing on the processes of “Doing Science” or working with the new DPS Social Studies curriculum.
